Think of it this way: With the high natural compression of the engine PLUS the turbo, you need higher octane to run correctly. Octane doesn't give more power, it decreases the combustion pressure of the fuel. Higher octane allows higher compression and forced induction engines to compress the mixture better, thus creating a better explosion and less wear on the engine. Lower octane will burn at lower compression, so most of the time the mixture is detonating before the engine reaches full compression. This is knock, and the engine retards the timing to compensate. This is called Knock Retard or KR. KR is the devil. You don't want it. So it's best to pay the premium for the premium and keep your car running correctly for years than to skimp and pay for repairs sooner.
