Ok, you're going to get all sorts of different opinions about this and here's mine:
If you leased the car, who cares? Do as Saab says.
If you bought the car and plan on keeping it, I would change the oil every 5000 miles (or sooner depending on your driving habits). It's cheap insurance. The better you take care of your car, the better it will take care of you.
Let's face it, little or no-maintenance cars are a result of marketing, not engineering. It's easier to sell you a car that claims all you need to do if fill it with gas and go. I think this is a result of the increase in leased cars - people just don't want to be bothered with maintenance. Again, if you leased the car why bother doing more than required; you won't have to deal with the consequence of neglect five years down the road.
And yes, synthetic is required. Saab or Mobil 1 0W-40 oil as per the manual.
