Corn cobb 5 cylinders.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Volvo S60 vs. Saab 9-3, Steve T., Sat, 24 Jun 2006 03:54:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I love to pick on Volvos, my old Saturn mate is the GSM for the local Volvo store. I give a lot of credit to Volvo with their design themes. They adapted well to FWD from the 240, 740, 940 series and I thought the 850 carried out Volvo styling themes remarkebly well. The new sucked in sides S60 Ford Tauras styling never particularly appealed, as did the sea of colored plastic that is the interior. You certainly don't confuse a Volvo for another brand their stepped sided styling themes produce unique grilles and taillight treatments unlike any other car.
I think Volvo did a great job with the S40 and the XC90, and the new S80 looks handsome. I fancy the S40 as the new Jetta, as the Jettas don't look like Jettas anymore.
Having spent quite a bit of time in Audis, also with their 5 cylinder engines, you can pick on them for being sorta' rough.
The Saab 9-3s are all 210 hp now, and much smoother than the corn cobb 5 cylinders. And Volvo hasn't matched the 250hp V6 of the Aero unless you compare that to the S60R, a quite expensive halo machine. For quite awhile Saab 9-5's and 9-3s have been more fun to drive than comparable Volvos and the 9-3SS takes that to another level with the understeer killing ReAxe passive rear wheel steering and better steering. 9-3 steering, while a little light of effort for some tastes, is quite good with great turn in and feel and now torque steer, which is why it can feel so light.
I find the Saab and Volvo interiors comparable quality wise, go sit in a new BMW or Benz or even/especially and Audi for that matter, I don't find the Swedish cars up to that level yet.
I'm glad to hear about the significant fuel mileage advantage of the Saab.
The 9-3SS also does very well in crash tests. I'm not taking anything away from Volvo safety, but it's the Saab that got the Gold.
There are no losers in this class, they're all good cars and a 9-3SS is more than competitive all the way through.
