The 9-3SS does not use a DI cassette like the older 9-3 or 9-5. The 9-3SS models use a different ignition system with separate ignition coils. The new ignition system has not had any postings on this BB to suggest any reliability problems.
The 9-3SS uses a completely different engine than the older 9-3 or 9-5. The ECOTEC derived 4-cylinder engine is all aluminium with a different oil pump design and a larger oil capacity. The 9-3SS also requires the use of full synthetic oil per the factory specifications. No complaints of oil sludging in the 9-3SS.
The 9-3SS Aero uses an Australian (Holden) derived V6 engine starting with the 2006 models.
So the 9-3SS is really a 'clean slate' car. There are no holdovers from the previous model Saabs. New engines, new suspension, etc. This is good as the old gremlins are gone, and so far no new gremlins have been discovered.
