I by no means am an automotive expert, however I did recently undergo the same issue about 2 months ago. I was in the market for a new wagon I had a 2002 Passat with the turbo and 5speed and when it ran it was great. Unfortunately 5 visits for plug wires multiple recalls and general lack of quality forced me to look elsewhere. Initially I had a set price and was not about to lease. I drove the A3 A4, mazda 6 wagon and the Subaru Legacy wagon. The A4 Avante was sweet but the price and its blood line was a bit scary. Besides if I want all wheel drive you can't beat the Subaru. The extra wt seemed a poor trade off for the possible benefit in hadling which I may never use in my daily use. The Saab is by no means a perfect car the 93 SC with the 2.0 5sp I purchased is not as crisp shifting as the VW or the Honda's or Toyota's I have owned or the 3 series BMW's I have driven. HOwever it is pure fun to drive and it is very willing to fly. I am constantly checking my speed. Fit and finish is not up to the Germans, however you can actually look under the hood and say I can do something. I found myself numerous times when I owned the VW, saying greatest engineers my ass. Add the incentives and a cargo area that is hands down more user friendly than anything I have run across and it was an easy choose. Plus it is nice to have a car that is not driven by every wannabe on their way up with a 3 series and an automatic tranny. That being said reliability will probably be an issue but if it is really a concern you would not look to Germany either. Sorry for this being so long winded. I don't want to tell you what to do just to say that I have been extremely happy with my jet black 2006 sc.
