I looked at the gear ratios of the 6 spd versus the 5 spd (including final drive) and figured out that although the 5 spd is better on the EPA highway cycle with an average speed of 48 mph, the 6 speed will spin the engine about 5% less rpm and so it should get better fuel economy in real highway driving. That's the one issue I have with my 2006 9-3 SC 2.0 T manual, it spins too fast on the highway and this hurts fuel economy. It does well in the city though. The new 6 spd tranny 5th gear will be nice for most passing, doubt you would need to downshift much more often.
My 2004 9-3 2.0 t rated at 20 city and 30 highway averaged about 1.5 mpg higher and a couple mpg higher in the real world even though my 2006 9-3 SC 2.0 T is rated at 22 city and 31 highway. The EPA highway cycle isn't very representative of the real world, especially since we now have 70 mph speed limits.
I would love to have that 6 spd put into my 9-3 SC so that I can keep the more unique interior and center mounted SID display.
