I attended the Oct 9-10 program; again a very professional and well-done program offering real value to the driver. About 30 people, so we used all the cars -- 9-3, 9-5, auto, stick, sedan, wagon / combi. I was able to drive one of each at least one time. For the autocross practice everyone used a 9-3 sedan, but the instructors craftily switched us to a 9-5 for the competition.
My take: 9-3 is more nimble, and probably slightly faster, especially from rest; very toss-able. The 9-5,however, was very competitive despite being bigger and heavier, and having a little less braking power perhaps. Both proved adept at all maneuvers. 9-3 V6 virtually eliminates turbo lag, which remains more noticeable in the 9-5.
Stick vs auto, as reported in another post, was a non-issue. That's been my experience with my 2006 9-3 Aero, as I wanted stick but ultimately chose the auto. Saab needs to make this transmission more crisp, more in the mode of the BMW auto, and do some refinement on downshifts. However, it is overall an excellent transmission. It gives up little to the stick in overall performance, rewards the enthusiast driver, and makes life easier in stop-and-go traffic.
An interesting point: cars from the school go back out as Saab program cars with new brakes and tires, and occasionally, new rotors. Otherwise, cars are considered to be operating well within the design envelope, and are perfectly acceptable for re-sale with appropriate warranty, etc. The enduring statement from the staff: "You've heard of program cars; well, this is a program."
