I just got back from the Nov 16-17 Saab Aero Academy. I already posted a review of the academy (see Nov 21 postings by George R). In short, definitely attend if you can spare the time and money. The Chateau Elan is a wonderful treat if your daughter is old enough to do the spa and what not during the day while you attend the academy. Otherwise, the attendees who stayed at the Holiday Inn didn't have any complaints. You still get the free dinner and wine tour no matter where you stay. And the Holiday Inn does provide a free shuttle ride to and from the Chateau. Rumor has it that if you ask very nicely, the folks at Panoz (they run the driving school) will let a guest watch some of the afternoon driving activities for free or for a small ($200) price. I wasn't able to confirm this - my wife and daughter went to the Mall of Georgia instead!
I drove thru West Virginia (270 N, 340 W, 7 W, 81 S, 77S, 85 S) so as to avoid going thru Richmond. It was a very nice drive although there was a lot of truck traffic on 81. Going down took me 11 hours - mostly due to stopping to change/feed my 1 year old daughter and getting caught in the heavy rain/storms on Wednesday evening. Coming back took 9 hours.
One warning - you'll definitely be tired at the end of the 2 days of driving instructions. So please don't plan on driving back to DC that night.
