My 03 9-3 Linear had a few electronic glitches at first, none of which interfered with driving the car. I then went to 41,000 miles with perfect reliability, and traded on an 06 9-3 Aero. At 13,000 miles it has been trouble free.
Both Saabs were as good as or better than our last three Honda's in terms of quality and nitpicky problems. Based on comments on this site, and discussion at the Saab Aero Academy, I believe a substantial number of problems may be related to poor PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) at some dealers.
Obviously, some folks have had genuine problems, but my perception is that Saab's reliability issues are largely resolved. If the 04 you're considering checks out mechanically, you should probably not be concerned.
You could consider buying an extended warranty if you're dubious. Good luck,
SENewhouse
