Today's cars does not like to be jump started and many car makers are warnning against that.
What they say should be done is to let the donor cars alternator charge up the battery in the dead car for awhile through the jumper cables before starting is attempted.
This is a bigger problems on the CAN equipped cars compared to the older ones.
Volvo for instance from 99 and up can trigger a whole bunch of fault codes (SRS light is one) if the battery is run down and then jump started and then you need to have factory scan tools to reset the codes.
