Some here may tell you to not sell your 9-5 as the "newer" GM'ed Saabs have lost their traditional Swedish character but I own an '04 9-3SS (our first Saab) and simply couldn't be happier. So here goes;
Known problems with the '03 and early '04 cars predominately concern the automatic transmission. A hose clamp/fitting that runs in between the radiator and the transmission somehow fails and allows radiator fluid into the transmission, which of course ruins the transmission beyond repair; some say a replacement transmission, out of warranty, is well over $4,000.00 bucks. Often times, the transmission replacement is on an extended, multi-month backorder even if it's under warranty...
Another known problem to all of the '03 onward 9-3 series cars is the peeling dashboard controls and door handles. This can also be expensive to replace (items affected are replaced, not repaired) if the car is out of warranty.
Bottomline is this; make sure you buy a car that is Certified Pre-Owned or for sure spend the extra cash to buy an extended warranty from some third party.
Our 2004 9-3SS Linear (the 4-cylinder, 175hp variant), that we purchased new, has had no major issues and has been a real joy to drive. Our Saab dealer is excellent and is located only 15 minutes or so from the house; this has made all the difference in the world in terms of ease of ownership, etc.
Good luck with your search!
