AFIK, engine sludge has not been an issue with 9-3s, even the first batch with their loooong up-to-15000 mile oil monitored change intervals. 9-5s, lacking oil condtion monitoring (actually, it's oil condtion estimating, not monitoring, but still good enough) have not had such a good record. Remember that 9-5s:
a) began with synthetic blend oil as the supplied grade, not Mobil 1 as supplied with for the 9-3SS
b) have a 5 quart oil capacity, not the 6 1/2 of the 9-3SS
c) have an air-to-oil cooler that does nothing to bring the oil up to temperature, as the water-to-oil cooler of the 9-3SS does, and
d) leave a quart of old oil in the oil cooler when the sump is drained, versus the "every last drop out" associated with the 9-3 design.
And, the 9-3SS 4 cylinder engine is low-friction by design, with features like roller tappets and aerodynamic shaped crank counterweights. It may not need the low friction rings like the 9-5 engine has to meet economy targets, but if it does, certainly the EGR has been designed from the beginning to deal with the blowby.
I guess that the GM Warranty Czar wasn't knowledgeable enough or willing to separate out the 9-5 from the 9-3SS. Hence the letter. Which I have not received, maybe b/c my car was delivered to me in Trollhattan.
