Addressing Sludge Posted by pokeyjoe [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: The "hoily war" once again. Oil requirements, SWEDECAR ![]() ![]() |
I believe the GM spec is part of an overall plan to address sludge in turbo engines by GM. A low base weight like 0W would certainly be more resistant to sludging, but is it really necessary? Saab (GM) also went from a traditional oil cooler (air cooled) to a liquid to liquid type utilizing coolant. This not only cools the oil to engine temp, but warms it up when its cold as well.
I guess my real question here is, in the presence of a liquid-to-liquid oil cooler/warmer, do we really need a "0W" base weight oil? The answer probably lies with how we drive. GM has to allow for "abuse" at both ends of the spectrum. My car barely warms up on the drive to work. If I drove that distance with my foot in the turbo, 0W oil is probably justified. I don't drive that way, but GM has to allow for people that do. Since I pay attention to engine temp, I may just start using an oil that has a base weight of 5W.
Of course there's the whole OCI algorythum on the SID issue. Who cares? :)
