Special manufacturers' oil ratings are common in Europe - BMW has their specs, Benz has theirs, VW has theirs, and I suppose Renault has theirs, although Fiat (IIRC) has publicly stated that using the appropriate ACEA spec is good enough for them. Castrol's 0W-30 meets GM LL 25A, as does Mobil 0W40 and the now defunct (in the USA) "Saab Turbo 0W30. Both the Mobil 1 and Castrol also meet a whole raft of other European standards. Myself, I don't see much potential "upside" to cross-referencing various other manufacturer's approvals and attempting to devine which, if any, are critical in meeting GM's spec for the purpose of using something other than Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec. For me, the critical issue with today's oil is the limit on phosphorous and it's effect on wear, especially chain wear. But the MB 229 spec includes a chain wear measurement, and both Mobil 1 and Castrol meet the MB spec as well as the GM LL spec. The 9-3 has an oil life monitor (or, more correctly, an oil life estimator) calibrated against the LongLife oil, and the engine itself was designed to use the thinner oil. As for when Saturn imports German-built Opels (a short-term project lasting only until they can get Spring Hill retooled) it's just a few lines of code to convert the oil life indicator from GM LL 025A to ILSAC GF-4.
