If your concerned with CR, get a 9-5, just about the only Saab that has ever somewhat pleased CR.
Otherwise you'll have to see through the CR reliability Japanese bias. One note is that all cars have dramatically improved in reliability in the last 10 years so that the least reliable exceeds the measurement of the most reliable from 10-15 years ago. So the unreliabilty risk has gone down tremendously as the whole industry embraces quality.
Road & Track Sept '05 Owner Relilability Survey was "average" and that included mostly 1st year '03s
Power wise a 9-5 has the 260hp four, no issues with V-8 owners there, same with the 9-3SS Aero V6. I would say the 2.0T is more than adequate, faster than many V-8 on trucks and SUVs.
9-3 or 9-5, all the cool people drive SportCombis....
