GM Long Life (GM LL 025a/b) approved oil if you are going to follow the oil-life monitor to control your oil change interval. There are two widely sold oils in the USA that meet the spec - Mobil 1 0W40 and Castrol 0W30. ELF is becoming available here, and it too has oil that meets the GM Spec.
If you use anything else, then you need to address the oil change interval. You can probably use any good synthetic oil so long as you cut down sufficiently on the change interval, say change at 40% indicated oil life. But now you are changing oil more often and using more oil filters, and you need a tech 2 to reset the oil change monitor when you're that far away from it requiring a change. So I don't see you saving any money.
I'd tend to avoid higher viscosity oil in this engine as well. The oil temperature is very well controlled by the oil/water heat exchanger, and the engine is designed for what is essentially a "heavy side of 30" weight oil. Note that the viscosity difference between Mobil 0W40 and Castrol 0W30 *in the bearings* is about 3% (one part in 35).
