In my epxerience, Pirellis are notorious for wearing quickly. You'll find those tires are some exotic machinery, too. It is not uncommon for summer tires to have short treadlife-it is the tradeoff for ultimate grip. Tires with long treadlife generally have low rolling resistance-which translates to lower dry/wet grip and poorer handling relative to performance tires.
20k miles is not bad (but not great) for such high performance tires.
For me personally-I'd rather be able to stop a few feet shorter and stay on the road in wet conditions than worry about how long my tires last. Llike Tire Rack says-tires are like shoes. You don't wear Ferragamos to play tennis, and you don't wear Air Jordans to a wedding.
I've posted before on the Goodyear F1 GS-D3s, so won't bore others about how great a tire it is. I say get'em.
