Does it sound like a set of keys rattling around in a coffee can that is under a blanket? Does it only happen under acceleration at low'ish rpm (around 2200--2700)? Mine ('07 2.0T SS) appeared to be pinging (i.e., "pre-ignition" of fuel in the combustion chamber) until about 5000 or 6000 miles were on the clock and then it went away. I think some engines will do this prior to break in.
When its happening its not good for any engine so presuming it is "normal" on my car I tried to go easy in the rpm space where it occurred until it went away (i.e., no chugging up hills at 2300 rpm etc). I suppose it could also be chains clanking/rubbing on something that eventually wears away...but on mine it had all the characteristics of pinging (and I am very familiar with pinging because my v-twin motorcycle engine loves to do it... and I spend LOTS of time trying to eliminate it...either by retarding ignition timing, ensuring no oil gets into the chamber, proper air/fuel mix, reducing load/gear changes etc).
