Pat,
Thanks for the agreement. What I mean by properly done cold start, it just basicly allowing everything to warm up for starting and cooling down before cutting off the engine. It isn't anything to complex. Most people are aware of this, but I've riden with some people who get in a car, start it and go. With a turbo, as boost is being created the fan spins many rpms. As oil is cold it will not lubricate the bearing nearly as well as warmer more viscous oil. You know as well as I do, when oil is very cold it can get a little bit "gummy" which is not very condusive to lubrication. I like to allow the engine to run for a few minuites before taking off because Saab turbo's are great about giving very low end torque. I think I can get full boost around 1800 rpm which is very low. Also, it is important to allow the motor to run for about a minuite or two once you are parked to allow the motor to "idle down." I am not a mechanic first of all, but the consensus I have recieved from my freind who own turbo cars is that is important. When a motor is boosted it will run hotter than a NA engine beacuse more air induction means more gasoline which means more combustion and more heat. So when you park you allow the motor to cool down a few degrees evenly before cutting it off. I have tested this by feeling the turbo after hard driving and it very hot, but allowing the engine to run for a minuite or two seems to disipate the heat. I believe they actually make "turbo timers" to allow motors to idle for a minuite or two after you leave your car. This may be overkill for stock Saab 9-3's because they only push about 8-12 pounds of boost. But in more souped up cars where boost is up to around 15 lbs and more I have seen more and more "timers" being used. Perhaps I am being trivial with this, but I am a firm believer in allowing cars with turbos to warm up and idle down. Thanks for clarification with the SID being moved. I knew they still had it, but I certinaly do not agree with moving it from the top of the dash. I am also pleased with the agreement of 05-07. I know it is asking alot by seeing how the owner treated the car, but turbo failure can be very costly. I like the idea of owning a car for the longest amount of time possible and I believe that the little things I mentioned can extend the life of the car. Thanks.
