For buying a 9-3, they changed the body of the car in 2003. I happen to own an 03 and I cannot reccomend it because it has alot of little "quarks" that were not able to be tested properly. By tested properly I mean, once a new body is used it is normally a good idea to let the cars be sold and driven and use the overall feedback to see what minor adjustments need to be made in future years. If I were buying used I would focus on an 05-07. For some reason they eliminated the display screen on the top of the dashboard (I'm not sure what it is called, maybe SID but that thing sure comes in handy) in the 2008 and newer models. As far as issues go, over the years the 9-3's have not had many recalls and they are pretty well built cars. If the location did not matter from where you are buying from, stick with a car out of the south and out of major cities. The north has much colder weather (obviously) and that means the motor has had more cold starts. Turbo's do not like cold starts unless they are done properly. Also, there is much more road salt which is not very good for the body of the car. As far as motors go, you have the 2.0t (175 hp) and the 2.0T (210 hp). I drive the 2.0t and it does very well. I get around 33 mpg in the interstate and I feel the power is adequate. The 210 hp version to my understanding only uses 3 more pounds of boost. The main engine is essentially the same. You will get more low end torque with the 175 hp motor but you will get more high end with the 210, mainly beacuse the bigger turbo takes a little bit longer to spool up. So, if I were buying I would look for a 2005-2007 9-3. And of course Carfax. I hope this helps.
