I've had Saabs since 1981. Since all but the new one were 900 models and I knew the mechanical features (I have the factory shop manuals), I bought my new-driver teenager a 1993 900 S Automatic.
His complaint was "Why did you buy me such a slow car" to which I replied "You're an inexperienced driver". I didn't want him driving my modified 1988 900 Turbo Convertible 5 speed (which I still have).
By the way, he's now 4 years older and bought his own 1999 9-3. His buddy bought a used 900 Talladega automatic and my brother bought a 9-5 wagon, all without any express advice or commentary by me.
So, the cars are good, but a fast model can be a little harder to handle for an inexperienced driver, so I wouldn't buy a new-driver teenager an Aero, Viggen or SPG. An automatic gives them one less thing to think about.
Finally, there has always been an active independent Saab mechanic community, so I wouldn't even worry too much about GM news, except for warranty coverage.
