Hondas aren't bad cars, that's just the truth of it. They're not as much fun as a Saab, but they are cheaper and more reliable. The big difference between Japanese engines and European engines tends to be where the torque is available. Saabs ZIP because you get it all as soon as the turbo spools up but with many Japanese engines you need to rev up to 4-5k first. Add in the suspension and steering difference and while the cars may LOOK similar on paper the driving dynamics are very different in a way no tire will ever make up for.
If he digs the Honda that's fine, but I'd definitely cross shop a couple more interesting things in his position. The VW CC comes to mind, they're absurdly nice for the money and unless 4 doors are a must have that new Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been getting great reviews.
