AFAIK, there are no substantial drivetrain differences with the 2.0T cars, except for the XWD versions. XWD have a 6spd autotragic this year. Maybe they tweaked the final drive ratio. Or for that matter, given how the EPA test is conducted it may only take a tweak to the software so that it shifts up a little sooner or something. It is an amazingly artifical test.
I would take those EPA numbers with a serious grain of salt where Saabs are concerned. I have an '08 SportCombi with 6spd manual transmission, I get 29mpg in mixed urban/suburban commuting type driving, and 33+ on long highway trips at 75-80mph. And I an NOT in any way a slow driver. My car was rated at something like 19/29. Automatics will do a little worse, but I find it impossible to believe that they would be 5mpg worse on the highway. The 9-3 is a far more modern car than your current 9-5, and will probably get considerably better mileage in the same driving conditions, assuming we are talking FWD cars.
I would heartily recommend the leftover '08s - cheaper, and a better warranty.
