Can a jump start blow my stereo's amplifier?

So I took my 2003 9-3 into the mechanic for a tire balance and rotation, and somehow it came back with a blown amplifier.
The mechanic says that the battery was dead when he turned the car on this morning -- he gave no explanation for this, but the battery is only 2 years old, so they must have left something on in the car.
He had to jump start it this morning (with a 12V source). Stereo was off. When I drove away from the garage, I turned on the stereo, and the amplifier was clearly blown. I took it right back.
He's telling me that the jump start could not possibly have caused the blown amplifier -- that this is a common problem on the 9-3 due to moisture getting in -- and that he's not taking any responsibility for it. He says it must have been a coincidence.
I don't know enough about the car's electrical system to challenge this statement, but it sounds fishy to me.
