Play in Ball Joint?

I went to a local Sears Auto Center for some new tires. I figured an alignment was in order as the passenger side front tire was showing a lot of wear on the outside of the tire.
Tires had around 45K on them, Michelin Primacys, and I only noticed the wear in the past month or two. I've rotated the tires every 7500 miles. Car is an 04 Arc with 123k miles.
After the new tires were on, the shop manager came out and said they discovered the driver's side ball joint had some play in it, and that doing an alignment would be kind of a waste as it would not last. Quoted me anywhere from $250 to $450 depending on something like whether the ball joint was a one piece unit or multiple pieces.
Car was at the dealer a little over a month ago for a different issue, and they said everything with the suspension was fine.
Does anyone happen to know if a worn ball joint on the driver's side would cause wear on the passenger side tire?
Any thoughts on if I would be looking at the $250 or $450 side of the repair possibilities?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
