The suspension design chief was careful to point out that Saab selected a front strut with the largest rod diameter commonly available to maximize the suspension's lateral stiffness. Being built on the GM "Epsilon" platform, you will be able to find many shocks designed for, say a Chevy Malibu, that will fit and seemingly work OK, but handling will suffer. Check part numbers and make sure it is Saab specific.
Turns out the hard part of building struts is the outer housing: the tooling is quite expensive. This is why, for example, Koni only ever supplied an internal cartridge for the 9000 struts. Since the 9-3 is based on a global GM platform, every shock manufacturer will have housings. After that, the internal details like rod diameter, piston, seals, and valving are all relatively trivial.
