Keep in mind to separate the 2002 and older (03 conv) 9-3 and the 2003 and up 9-3 Sport Sedan in your research.
Otherwise it is going to be messy with suggestions up and down and back and forth.
I don't think any of us have seen a large number of failed head gaskets on the Sport Sedan 4 cyl engine but it could happen I guess.
Valve cover gaskets are leaking sometimes and I found that the bolts with rubber cushions might have to be replaced as well since they play a crucial role in clamping force on the valve cover and gasket.
I have a couple of customers though with hard to diagnose oil leaks and what I have starting to see is that the PCV system seems to have a hard time equalizing pressure and vacuum between top and bottom of engine and it pushes oil out where ever it finds a weak spot.
None of the customers have been interested to find the real problem so I can't say what the repair would be and if it in fact might be piston rings that start to get sloppy creating too much blow by that pressurize the crank case and over powering the PCV system.
