Hi again folks,

Replaced the Ventus Evo V12 235/45 for new Pilot HX MXM4 in 225/50 : car is back to normal, the "i follow every rut" is now gone.

The Ventus were sold on kijiji in 15 minutes (I guess my price was a bit low at 240$CDN for 6/32th)...

After mounting the new tires on the car, I had a flat tire warning at right front. Pressure was ok at 35 psi. I did drive the car for 15 minutes, still there. I then filled it at 40 psi, waited a couple of hours, and checked : gone it was. I then reajdusted the pressure to 35, without moving the car a single inch.

Speaking of TPMS... I wrote an article about them in a trade magazine last fall. Many suppliers insist on the fact that nickel-plated cores must be uses in aluminum-bodied valves, to prevent galvanic corrosion. More, one must use the proper plastic caps with a seal at the bottom to prevent any moisture creeping in.

So obviously, the young lad in the shop did the complete opposite. Since new rubber valves are included in the mounting process, for TPMS, they throw away the cores from the valves and install only new brass cores in place. Bad idea I told him. He didn't knew that, so he went hunting on the floor to reinstall my old nickel-plated cores.
Strike 1.
At the end of the process, when it was time to go, I looked at the valve caps : standard black plastic caps instead of my sealed gray caps... More hunting on the shop floor, to find the proper caps.
Strike 2.

During the time I was there, another tech had to repair a flat on a Caravan. He quicly destroyed the TPMS valve, exactly because the inner core was brass and welded to the aluminum stem... So the car was stuck there waiting for a new valve/core/nut/gasket to arrive.

Back home, I took a look at my OEM mag wheels with the winter tires. 2 of them had brass cores. I removed them and found both of them being greenish and oxydized in place. Not stuck yet, but would have been in a couple years for sure.

More, since they had black plastic caps last February when I got the car, I quickly bought metallic chrome caps with a proper gasket in the bottom. Two months later, these caps were stuck on the aluminum stems, enough for me to use a small socket to remove them.

So, two lessons here : for your expensive OEM TPMS sensors : nickel-plated cores and gray plastic caps with a seal. That way, corrosion will be minimal.

If you have aftermarket sensors with rubber/brass valves, then brass cores and the proper black caps with a seal are mandatory to guarantee a long trouble-free life.

I now understand why everyone and their cousins are complaining about TPMS. The knowledge is there, but not everyone follow the rules... If so, then they should last the 10 years they are designed for.
