I'm currently rocking an 02 9-3 SE and 03 9-5 Aero combi, both manuals, that I've been driving daily for my commute. I used to have a Turbo X combi, also manual.
I would say that one thing you need to be particularly sensitive to, is to keep ahead of the any potential components that could lead to a breakdown. Example: my 9-3's original fuel pump died at ~165k mi, requiring me to get it towed to my mechanic. If I were to do it again, I'd have had the fuel pump replaced preemptively by 150k mi. While they had the car, I had the starter replaced preventatively.
Some parts have gone out of production, and I think that's to be expected for cars this old. For example, I needed a new oil cooler for my 9-3, and there were none in the US. Someone ended up helping me get one shipped from Europe. I've been shopping for front shocks for the same car. My first and seond choices, Bilstein B4 and factory Sachs shock are currently unavailable. The more premium Konis and Bilstein B6/B8 is still available if you don't mind spending a bit more.
I'd say I continue to be fairly confident in the reliability of these 2 Saabs as my daily drivers. My concern now actually is using them for road trips. Here, I'm beginning to explore getting a new car or at least a younger car...
If you're a DYIer I'm say the 4-cylinders are much easier to work on than the V6.
