The computer uses a complex algorithm to determine oil life. Among many other factors it uses, how many times engine has been started, how many times the crankshaft turns, how long the engine runs at tempature, average RPMs, etc.
The oil Saab recommends for the Sport Sedan is their own Saab Turbo Oil 0W-30 Long Life Fully Synthetic or oil which complies with GM-LL-A-025 (whatever that means, but I think Mobil 1 is the only oil which meets these standards).
According to the Saab Workshop Information manual :
"The risks of using oils that do not fulfill GM-LL-A-025 as described above are great. If the oil grade is too low, there is a risk of either wear due to to poor lubrication or deposits in the engine due to prematurely aged oil that is not able to keep the engine clean. Eventually, this can lead to blockage of oil passages and engine damage. The timing chain is also one of the components that can be seriously damaged by poor oil quality. This will result in rattling in the timing chain and balancer shaft circuit"
I own my 2003 9-3 Sport Sedan (well the bank still owns it for now) but I personally change the oil every 5k miles. It can never hurt to change the oil too much.
