When the '03's came out three things changed:
1) Fully synthetic oil meeting GM's new "Long Life" spec GM-LL-A-025 was now REQUIRED (previously any old semi-syn was "recommended")
2) Oil capacity was increased by 50% (from 4L to 6L)
3) An on-board Oil Life Monitor (OLM) was installed
As long as you use an oil meeting this new GM spec (or better), then the increased capacity & continuous condition-tracking by the OLM will protect your engine. (Mobil 1 5W-40 & 15W-50 would be two examples of oils exceeding the new GM spec for protection. Where they don't meet the spec is in fuel economy.) In addition, the OLM is pre-programmed to never exceed 18,000 miles or two years' use.
As long as lesees never cut corners by using cheaper oil (& none of us here would EVER do that, right??), then there's nothing to worry about long-term. And if you're worried too much about it, simply change the oil at the OLM's 50% mark & let it continue to run down to 0%. Just don't use anything other than a full syn which either meets or exceeds the new GM spec.
