9-3SS tire pressures

My '04 9-3 Linear wears 215/55-16 tires on the optional rims. The owner's manual calls for 35/32 psi (F/R), while the sticker on the door jamb calls for 41/38. As I live in Pothole Hell right now, I've been going with the higher pressures in an attempt -- successful so far -- to keep my rims intact.
Any ideas on how to figure out which of the two recommendations is the right one?
