Mike,
I did not take physical delivery of the car. During the 2 visits we had at Symes SAAB in Pasadena, CA, we were very specific that we are not in CA until July24 and will be picking up the car on the 25th.
I contacted SAAB customer service (even faxed a letter to the President and COO). These people told me the SAAB practice is to start the lease and warranty period on the day the customer takes delivery of the car.
I went back on July25 after the dealer confirmed the car is ready. But it was not. Had to wait another 4 days until yesterday. Then we called SAAB together. The Sales Manager mentioned something about "RS date" and SAAB back-peddled and said there is nothing SAAB can do. The warranty period started a couple of weeks back, dealer sent the paperwork into Dept of Motor Vehicles, etc.
Here comes the surprising part. The Sales Manager Scott did something totally unexpected. He sat in front of me and said "what do I need to do to put a smile on your face?" I asked about an extended warranty since now my warranty period is shorted. Scott gave me an extended warranty on the spot: same mileage but a year longer. Then I said what about the extra lease payment, license/tax? He said how much and will refund me the amount via a check. Then he added that he will throw in a gift from the SAAB catalog to make up for all the trouble. I am getting the cell phone cradle.
I drove off the lot with my 4th SAAB: a 9-3 ARC with 3 year lease, winter/touring package, 17-inch wheels, auto, sunroof, xenon lights, with 15K annual miles etc. All for $2500 down and $461 per month.
Scott made all the decisions on the spot. No need to go check with anyone. I am sold on dealing with a family-owned dealership rather than these large "LostNation" outfits where they check with the guy in the little room for everything and wastes a lot of your time. Symes...so easy!! The car drives great. Fit and finish not as good as my last 900 but not bad.
