Vastly?...no.....curveball coming at'cha..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Sport Sedan Linear vs Arc, Will in Detroit, Tue, 24 Aug 2004 03:46:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On a casual drive around the block, the Linear might even feel snappier, but let it all hang out and get the revs north of 4,500 and the extra power in the 210hp Arc can be felt. The Arc has a bigger turbo and hotter cams, the hotter cams enhance the top end power, but don't add anything down low. Linear and Arc will likely feel less snappy than your '02 9-3 as torque peaks have moved up from 1,800 rpms in your old 9-3 to 2,500 rpms in the 9-3SS, but the 9-3SS motors are smoother and rev better, especially the top end in the 210hp.
You can equip a Linear so that it's faux Arc, by getting the premium package and the 16's. The premium package in a Linear is the ACC (dual digital climate control), like in the Arc, 6 disc in dash CD changer, and the color matched lower bodywork with fog lights, so that the Linear and Arc will appear identical save for the "t" vs "T" after the 2.0 on the back and the absense of the Infotainment screen on the radio.
The Arc has the dual power seats with memory, Linears are manual seats or power drivers seat only, and Arcs get the 300w 13 speaker system with the Infortainment screen. How important these additional luxury features are to you no one can say. My wife hates ACC and power seats, could care less about 16" wheels vs 15", she would prefer the Linear and wouldn't notice the power difference either the way she drives.
There's normally around $3.5k difference from a "normally" equipped Linear and Arc. Kick in the premium package on the Linear, and allow for a $1k greater purchase incentive on the Arc and the gap narrows. The leases for a Linear and Arc are real close too, the Arcs having better incentives, rates and residuals.
Now here's the curveball coming at'cha. Have you considered a 9-5 Arc? After incentives the purchase price will be very, very close to a 9-3 Arc. The 9-5 will lease for about $50 a month more. 9-5's have more power, 220hp with the torque at 1,800rpms vs 210hp and torque at 2,500, more luxury, better tunes, more familiartiy for 9-3 owners. The 9-3 has that incredible 9-3SS handling, but a 9-5 aint't too bad, and both are a quantum improvement over the old 9-3 chassis.
So low price means Linear, which you might be very happy with. For leasing look at an Arc. For purchase a 9-3 Arc and 9-5 Arc are very, very close, but for a lease a 9-3 Arc has over a $50 advantage over a 9-5.
