jak (who posts mostly on the performance BB) was just telling me about this last weekend. there is a screen in the bottom of the oil pan designed to pick up junk circulating in the oil in tandem with the filter. apparently the holes in the screens of 9-3's are significantly smaller in diameter than those in the OG900's, and are so small that they often get plugged up with everyday gunk/sludge. when this sludge builds up enough, the majority of the oil is trapped underneath the screen, and the engine doesn't get any lube. since the oil never leaves the system, no check oil lights come on to warn of this imminent failure. of course, starve the engine of oil and it will seize...which is what sounds like happened to you.
jak says to avoid this problem, one can have the screen removed and the holes manually enlarged...about a 3-4 hour job. he said any good indie mech should know about this fix. he's working on a 9-3 that had this happen to it, so i'm sure if you posted on the perf BB he'd reply if you have any other questions... he may know about the coolant leak problem...i'm not sure if that contributed in your case, but i'm sure it didn't help. nonetheless, the screen fix is a simple preventive step that the rest of us can take.
