Unfort Balance Shafts have been around for many years. A friend had a 1980's Volvo 240 with balance shafts. We only found out when one snapped at 110km/hour and a 2 inch piece of it made it's way out of the engine block, through the side panel, and onto the side of the road! The poor thing did have about 300,000km on it though. Needless to say that volvo is now a 1 metre cube of paper weight! Yes, it went to the crusher.
Saab has created alot of tech and features that have filtered through GM cars worldwide. In Australia, Holden (Australia's GM company) are using alot of Saab parts. I just love sitting in our friend's 2003 Holden Commodore and pointing out different bits that came from Saab (cup holders, active head restraints, some switchgear etc). Ironicly, there is talk that the next Holden Commodore due 2005, may be re-modeled to become a large V6 Saab (last I heard... to be a 9-6 or 9-8, or a possible 9-5 replacement). :-)
