Lovely dilemma.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: new vs. used, Wrtctr, Sat, 25 Sep 2004 11:24:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
$5,600 more for a three year newer car, pretty good. Likely the '01 has only 3 years of CPO warranty remaining and no remaining free maintenance, the 04 has 4 full years and 3/36 free maintenance.
Likely the depreciation on both will be about the same in actual dollars for three years, a six year old 2001 likely worth about $6k and a 3 year old 9-3SS about $12k. So saving depreciation by buying used doesn't really hold true in this example or in most actually. Most folks would think they are being thrifty about depreciaion by buying used, it ain't so! A car drops in actual dollars from 3 years old to 6 years old about the same total actual dollar amount as a far more expensive new one does from year 0 to 3.
Dunno' where you found a base Linear MSRP $27,120 for only $21,500, if you aren't a GM employee, but if you did, I'd jump on it.
One neat trick is that if you are financing, you get an additional $500 incentive for a lease AND a super low lease rate. If you lease if for 3 years and then buy it for two, your total investment and your monthly payments will be less.
4 year payments on $15.9k are very similar to 5 year payments on $21.5k, but the 5 year payment comes with a car 3 years newer. Or better still, 3 year LEASE payments are the cheapest of all.
A 9-3SE, 99-2002 is a nice snappy car, but nothing special in the hanling department, typical FWD. A 9-3SS is an incredible handling car, even surpassing the German makes known for their handling.
