I bought a 2001 9-3SE with only 10,000 k on it for around 18, and it is a CPO car good until 2007. I should have paid a little less, but the car was immaculate. I had the choice of getting a new 9-3 Aero 5 speed for exactly 30k, which is what the dealer and I settled on at the end.
I thought about it, and since I only had $20,000 saved, it just did not make sense to me to go into 12 k debt (including taxes) for a new car that was really only better in the handling department. I know, the new one gives you the 3 year free maintenance, but very little goes wrong until years 3 to 4 anyway, which is why they stop it at 3.
My advice, buy what you can afford and don't go into debt to get the latest model. Saabs and Volvos have terrible resale values. Why spend 30 k for a car that will be worth almost half in three years. A BMW will not lose the same money so quickly, but it is more expensive to get initially too. If you buy a car two or three years old with few miles you are set because you capture the depreciation and get the warranty too.
