My mechanic said that the "Check Engine" light will go on when there is an issue with any of the systems it monitors. If the problem goes away after 3 or 4 "sessions" (he didn't say what that was) then the light will go off. However, the on board diagnostics will remember what went wrong. In my case the light went off prior to my scheduled appt., then it came back on several days later. Both times the diagonsitic computer said it was an all encompassing O2 failure. I had the O2 sensor replaced and everything is fine now.
Bottom line seems to be: your light may go on and off depending on the if the condition persists. If it runs OK then there is no immediate danger. My mechanic charged me $30 to read the diagnostics and give me a reco. Seemed high but he deducted it from the final bill for the repair.
