First year 2003 9-3SS' and first year 1999 9-5's were darn good. I don't think time has produced any prejudice against a '99 9-5 for example.
There was a cam belt learning curve with the original GM V6's in Saabs and IMO there are more negative vibes about an older Saab V6 because of the outstanding turbo fours, than because of any Achilles heel type fault of the V6. Old time Saab mechanics just never warmed up to that engine, but I know quite a few well into their second 100,000 miles.
The Alloytec won't be a new engine, just a reworking of an existing achitecture, much as the 9-3SS motor was a reworking of the Ecotec first introduced in Saturns. And there have been zero motor issues with the 9-3SS. The small number of 9-3SS problems were with software issues as opposed to hard parts throughout the car.
