Koni shocks are considered the best as they work very well and you can adjust them to suit your tastes and your road conditions. With questionable roads, lowering springs might be a bad idea. The design has very little vertical travel before you are on the bump stops. When you are on the bump stops, your wheels are very vulnerable to the bends. You can hack off part of the stops when doing the strut to get more travel in which the dampers are working. This can be done with stock or lowered springs. Some folks have busted oil pans. Lower springs takes you one step closer.

genuinesaab.com has an improved large urethane bushing kit that is better than the other alternatives out there. Replacing the other two lower bushings with eurethane helps too. The upper mount may be torn and pooped out. Search for 'scrub test' to see how much squirm there is in the upper mounts. These get replace while doing the struts, otherwise you are going for two labor cost hits.

There are some subframe braces that have had some very good reviews. genuinesaab again.

Replacing front bushings with poly is a lot of work. A shop press is needed. Not really a DIY for most. So with shop labor, a bit expensive. KCSAAB.com has the other poly bushings. The lateral arm bushing is quite hard to resist geometry change. These do not make the ride any harsher. The rear axle bushing can also be replace with poly. Sway bar bushings in poly also help, but they are not easy to replace, sub-frame needs to be lowered a bit. Don't know if there are any workarounds to that.
