You put more importance on the "head unit" than the speakers? It's one thing to voice your opinion, but calling someone "wrong" with that advise is pretty funny. Thanks for the humor.

Fact: sound comes out when air is moved by speakers. SPEAKERS is everything. No matter how good is your entire stereo system, if speaker isn't good, than sound quality isn't good. -Have you heard of the BOSE airwave radio? Do you think the radio itself is all that rave? Or do you think their speaker/speaker enclosure technology that made it all that famous?

The "head unit" you are thinking of consist of "effect" such as EQ, cross over, pan, power amp, etc is already built in. However, actual "head unit" has nothing to do with the sound quality. If you are self appointed audio phile or whatever you are (if you are satisfied with your OEM stereo set up, you must be _____ so enjoy your stereo set up), I hope you understand that "connection" has more to do with sound quality than the head unit. Use bad connection/wire and you will get added noise from that.

Techinically "head unit" and "amp" has nothing to do with the sound quality. CD players job is to transfer the data on disc to sound signal. Amp is to add more juice. Both of these things should be clean/pure with no added/subtracted to the sound quality.
Now some of them "head unit" is built in with EQ, pan, amp, etc. If that's the case, than better the quality, the better the sound is, but whenever you get a "built in" you are locked in for that. You can't add or upgrade one things at a time. Just like home stereo. It's easier to upgrade the stereo that's by pieces than one of those with everything built in. I say use the head unit for playing CD and get a good effect to put it between the CD player and the amp.

If you are really wanting to upgrade your stereo sytem, start with your speakers. That's where you notice the most difference. If your new speakers is rated with more wattage, than you should also upgrade your amp so that amp is not working extra hard. When you push the amp too much, you are also pushing the noise that's coming out of it, so make sure the wattage in amp and speakers are compatible. (what's his name said more wattage can help move the bigger speakers... The size of speakers has nothing to do with it. It's the rating of the speakers. Some 10 inch can handle more than the others.) Than I would add EQ and such in between the CD player and the amp. The last thing you should upgrade is the head unit/CD player.
