You are mistaken. Everything affects sound quality. Changing speakers will probably make the most noticable difference, but changing the amplifier, preamp, wiring, etc. will make a difference too, if you select better equipment. Some head units include the amplifier and others are only the preamp and tuner with a separate amp.
Unfortunately, as far as I can tell (since I do not yet own a Saab), changing the speakers will be relatively easy but changing everything else is a major operation. I have only heard the Linear sound system and was disappointed. I forgot to check out the 300W system in the Arc when I had my test drive.
I used to sell home theater equipment and a little car stereo, and I know firsthand that changing out certain parts make a big difference. In my current car, I swapped out the stock Ford head unit with a Pioneer Premier and replaced the factory speakers with Boston Acoustics and you won't believe the differnce it makes, and that is a rather modest system.
Amps do make a difference. And it's not about wattage. That's why a 40WPC Harman Kardon amp will blow away a 165WPC Pioneer amp, even though the numbers make lead you to believe the opposite. Not all equiment is created equal and you usually get what you pay for.
By the way, Bose systems suck. You're paying for size and looks, not sound quality. If you ever measured the frequency response on any of their systems, you'd be shocked. I used to sell those too, and comparing them to other brands you'll realize they're not all what they're cracked up to be. The Wave Radio is nothing more than a $500 alarm clock. It is unfortunate that so many automakers are going to them for their sound systems. My former colleagues reported that they removed quite a few of them and replaced them with mass-market electronics and their customers were quite happy with the results. Too bad Saab didn't stick with the H/K units because they were quite good.
