I had a 2001 9-5 Aero and now have a 2004 9-3SS Aero. Both were very reliable. The 9-3SS has had some minor systems-related glitches, but I suspect it's due to the richer function available. Only a couple of trips to the dealer for minor stuff and they've been great. I prefer the 9-3SS driveability (should I say 'tossability'). It's a bit more responsive in the chassis, and with BSR PPC applied it's low-RPM driveability and throttle response is superb. I think the 9-5 is a gorgeous car, still one of the nicest looking sedans on the market, as is the new 9-3. If you need the greater rear seat space of the 9-5 and larger trunk, go for it.
The air-conditioned seats available in the 9-5 are awesome, if you live in a warmer climate (as I do) you'd love them. I don't pay Consumer Reports any heed, they never post detailed sample sizes and so forth, and they tend to favor Camry-style cars anyway. I don't know if you're looking at the top Aero model of both lines or lower trim level, if so then you have a lot of price comparisons to do. Both are great cars in my humble opinion.
