I'm 180 out with that..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Saab 9-3 or 9-5?, bill h., Wed, 15 Dec 2004 15:50:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We have a basketball playing family in San Diego and the college age son, 6'8", fits much better in a 9-3SS. Check the brochures, the 9-3SS, 2003's and up, has more room in every front seat dimension, more legroom, more headroom, more shoulder room.
The 9-3SS deosn't feel as roomy as a 9-5 at first sit owing to the higher cowell or dash height and the SID binnacle at the base of the windshield doesn't diminish that feeling. The 9-5 feels roomier because of the lower dash and lack of a binnacle, but stretch out in either and you'll see. The seat goes so far back in a 9-3SS almost 6ft me can't even push a clutch in with my tippy toe.
And you can get a 9-3SS without a sunroof, and save the dough to. You can special order a 9-5 without a roof, good luck getting a dealer to do that for you, but Saab doesn't lower the price accordingly. If you want a sunroof 9-3SS, there's still way more headroom than in a 9-5
Engine vibration is another thing that I'm "180" with you on. I find the new all aluminum 9-3SS motor to be quite a bit smoother than the old 2.3 in the 9-5. Balance shafts were an add on to the 900-9000 motor whereas the "L850" block of the new 9-3SS, first introduced in a 2000 Saturn, had them designed in the first time. The 9-5 motor definetly has a rougher idle and off idle characteristic. Both are smooth at higher RPMs, but the 9-3SS motor has a higher, peakier power curve and rewards higher revs much better. I still prefer my 2.3HOT Aero engine, it's much more powerful, but a 9-3SS is definitely smoother and more rewarding to ref up all the way.
