The 3.5" speakers are crap and most 3.5" replacement speakers are also crap. The only good speaker out there is the Infinity Kappa 32.5CF. DO NOT confuse with the Infinity 3002CF. Some searches and 'shopping services' confuse the two, so a search for 32.5CF may take you to a 3002CF!
The 32.5CF has very good quality drivers. And it is the only product with a true crossover (X-over). The X-over needs to be a separate to contain the required bulky inductor and capacitors. All of the other 3.5" units that I have seen have a very tiny capacitor glued to the tweeter driver. That is not going to sound very good.
And now that you have an outboard X-over, for the best performance, I recommend that these be modified to replace the bi-polar electrolytic caps with poly caps or bypass with ploy caps. There is a lot sonic information coming out of the head amp that is lost. The above modifications are very revealing.
I have done the above on a 03 9-5 Aero and have recieved the speakers to do the same to a 04 9-5 Aero. (The physical mount on the 9-5 is not trouble free, but reports on the 9-3 do not indicate any problems.)
I did not purchase from e-bay this time. The shipping costs from these sources is nuts. $17 to $30. I would rather take my money elsewhere. email me for a reference. I will be ordering ply caps for this job today or tomorrow and will be able to share particulars on that as well.
So if you are able to use a soldering iron, I strongly recommend the X-over modification. No matter what you do with the head end electronics, the results are always limited by the speakers, and the midrange/tweeter units are the most important of all.
