Consider the environmental impact that is created when it becomes necessary to manufacture a replacement engine or rebuild one, because the manufacturer specified an oil change interval that results in a large number of well intentioned owners operating their cars in a manner that causes engine failure. The manufacturing/remanufacturing process consumes lots of resources and lots of environmental hazards.
I'm not referring to owners that are negligent in their maintenance, just those folks who do not consider their operation as severe and operate to the extended oil change intervals specified in the owners manual. In my opinion they should rename the severe duty operating category to normal and call the current normal category optimal or light duty. I think this would result in more owners using the conservative change schedules.
This could also result in those people who lease thier cars not creating conditions that result in early failure for the second owner.
