...that was the story with so many cars over the years, BMW 740 from the mid-90's in one example. The blocks loved to crack, so BMW eventually extended the warranty to 100K. Better than 'we know that the engines grenade and there's nothing to be done about it.'

Since Fords are bursting into flames again, I think the Saab stuff will fall out of the news cycle except those looking for it. Plus, VW, MB and Toyota have already been through/are going through the whole sludge thing, so it's not like it's a novel or unique problem. It's actually beginning to look like par for the course with the trend of extending 'free' intervals to kingdom come and specifying cheapo parts/fluids/etc. Saab was not the first to get bitten by this trend, and I'll bet they won't be the last.

Anyway, it won't affect value for new models, or older ones with full maintenance histories. For cars without, out on the used and auction lots...while you could practically name your price at those places, you can now knock off the cost of an engine, too.
