If sludge has been building up, it forms stable deposits, then if one switches from dyno or a blend to full synthetic, there is some support for the notion that the synthetic oil softens the deposits and they get loose and futher restrict the oil pickup screen. We have seen some reports of things like this when someone switches to synthetic on a used vehicle... perhaps leased and abused. So telling someone to switch to synthetic may just speed up a fatal process. I think that one should pull the VC and look for crud and/or drain the oil and go fishing with a wire to see what can be found that should not be there.
I wonder if simply looking at the end of the drain plug would tell the story.
