I've been having this same debate with myself ('02 Linear, 73K). On the one hand, the reigning paranoia says I should swap out and carry the old one as a spare.
On the other hand, the highly variable life (some people on this board have had three in the time I've had one) suggests that some DIs are defective. So why would I want to remove my obviously good one and replace it with a possibly defective one?
On the third hand, what if the DI failure isn't a "cause" of problems but an "effect" of other problems? The sludge problem, for example, is apparently the effect of a way of using the car, not really a defect in itself. If this is the case, then perhaps the way we use the car is what keeps the DI healthy, which would remain true with old one or new one. If this scenario is true, then swapping out would have no effect, positive or negative.
